The Ground Snake occurs over much of North America from southwestern Missouri to eastern California and southeastern Oregon to Central Mexico. Within the Atlas region, this species occurs in two disjunct ranges. It is found in the desert provinces of southeastern California and northeastern Baja California and from coastal northwestern Baja California southward along the peninsula to Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur. It is also found on the islands San José and San Marcos in the Gulf of California.
