The Atlas region, which includes San Diego, Orange, Riverside, and Imperial Counties in the United States and the Baja California peninsula and its associated islands in Mexico, has a rich herpetological diversity. Much of this region is arid and reptiles outnumber amphibians by a margin of seven to one.
