The Large-blotched Ensatina is found in pine-oak woodlands from the San Bernardino Mountains in southern California to the Sierra San Pedro Mártir in Baja California. In the Atlas region, this species is found in isolated mountain top populations in Riverside County (including the San Jacinto Mountains, Santa Rosa Mountains, and Cahuilla Mountain), San Diego County (Palomar Mountain, Laguna Mountains, Cuyamaca Mountains), and isolated populations in Baja California (Sierra Juárez, Sierra San Pedro Mártir). An additional isolated population in Baja California is located on near the coast on Volcán Riveroll at 70 meters in elevation; a location uncharacteristic for the species.
